5th Company Washington Artillery

The 5th Washington Artillery, also known as Washington Artillery, was a Confederate artillery unit formed in 1861 during the American Civil War. The unit was comprised of soldiers from New Orleans and was known for its bravery and effectiveness on the battlefield. They fought in many significant battles, including Bull Run, Antietam, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg, among others. The unit was noted for its unique “home-made” artillery pieces and its distinctive blue uniforms. After the war, members of the 5th Washington Artillery continued to serve in the military and the unit was later reorganized as the Washington Artillery of New Orleans, a National Guard unit that has served in numerous conflicts, including World War I and World War II. Today, the legacy of the 5th Washington Artillery continues through its descendant unit, the 5th Battalion, 141st Field Artillery, Louisiana Army National Guard.
